EMT - well known healthcare organization in US

There is a separate organization/program in US which is responsible to provide health care during emergency situations. That separate organization has been named as the EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). The staffs of this organization are trained so that they will be able to respond to any kind of emergency situations as soon as possible and give proper medical attention to the patients. Normally, EMT is related to the staffs who work in ambulance. These staffs are very different from ambulance drivers because they have been trained to provide medical treatments and to drive ambulance as well.

All the EMT staffs have to be certified and the certification is given as per the level of the training that they have gone through. The government of different states of US makes sure that this program/organization is available in their state. The standards that the EMT staffs of certain states must have are determined by the government of that state. The EMT staffs have to sit for the exam conducted by the NREMT (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians). Based on the results from this exam, the staffs are given certification. About 46 states use the certifications provided by the NREMT to judge the training level of EMT. The whole certification process itself shows the value of EMT course and certification in every state of US.

The US state has declared some level for medical service provider. Based on those levels the EMT is divided into four levels. Each of these levels faces different training and certification. The staffs of all these 4 levels are given different medical situations to handle.

• The first and basic level is the EMT-B. The staffs of this level provide some basic medical services like bleeding control, splinting and so on. The candidates will have to receive training of at least 110 hours.
• The second and intermediate level is the EMT-I/85. It includes the services provided in the basic EMT as well as use of airway devices, IV therapy and so on. The candidates will have to receive training of 200-400 hours.
• The third and intermediate or advanced level is the EMT- I/99. It is bit higher than the EMT-I/85 and includes medical services like cardiac monitoring and so on. The candidates will have to receive training of 200-400 hours.
• The final and the paramedic level is the EMT-P. This is the highest level of an EMT staff. They provide medical services like pharmaceutical administration, cardiac monitoring, fluid resuscitation and so on. They are also known as paramedics. The candidates will have to receive training of 1000 hours or more.

Since the US state has gone to an extra degree to separate the levels of the medical service provider, this alone shows how much importance an EMT program holds. They have also separated the required training for each level. After all, these people will hold the lives of people during an emergency situation and they will need to have the required knowledge and skills. If a person with not enough knowledge and skills try to perform the task which is above their level, then someone's life might be at stake. To avoid this EMT program makes sure that only suitable and worthy people can get position of the EMT staff.
